Gathering, analyzing, and sharing program data is crucial for a successful program launch, obtaining institutional assistance in research efforts. Establishing a positive relationship with departments - such as the Institutional Research Office, Institutional Effectiveness, or Office of Student Success -requires regular communication, alignment on programmatic and analytical goals, and a willingness to collaborate on joint projects.
Identify Your Data Needs
Clearly define what data you need to incorporate into your mentorship program and Mentor Collective Partner Dashboard - such as participant directory information and additional participant profile data. Identify where you access the relevant datasets, or what office can provide them. Additionally, it is important to have a clear understanding of what insights you hope to gain from the program and any interpretation or analysis support you may need.
Understand Your Institutional Research Office
Familiarize yourself with the functions and responsibilities of the Institutional Research Office.
- Are they focused on measuring a particular part of your institutions’ strategic plan?
- Do they have ongoing projects or initiatives that align with your research goals?
- Have they worked with your department or division previously? On what?
- What existing procedures do you need to follow when working with them?
Inquire about the resources, datasets, or expertise that the research office can provide. They may have valuable information or tools that can enhance your research or be willing to partner with you to look at your data and run their own analysis.
Share Your Program's Data
Your mentorship program’s outcomes are likely extremely aligned with institutional outcomes - and insights gained from your program should not live in a vacuum. Review insights from your Partner Dashboard and share your program’s goals, progress, and impact with those who could benefit in your department and across campus. Alternatively, share raw data from the Partner Dashboard Exports Page or via outbound SFTP with the Institutional Research Office for further and continual analysis.
