It’s finally happened—you’ve been officially matched! You now have a name and a profile for the person who will be your mentor or mentee.
So... what comes next?
Figuring out how to get the conversational ball rolling can be challenging. Beyond the logistics, building a brand-new relationship takes time, and it is completely normal to feel a bit anxious or unsure of how to initiate contact.
The good news? You don't have to guess. We’ve designed a checklist to help you build a strong, reliable foundation for your mentorship.
💡 Pro-Tip: You’ll notice references to our structured discussion guides below. These are readily available in the Resources section of your Participant Dashboard at app.mentorcollective.org. They contain deep-dive strategies on how to map out a highly successful partnership.

🔍When You're Matched
Initiate Contact: Send a brief introductory message via the Mentor Collective platform using our email or text templates. Need a few pointers on how to phrase it? Check out our "Tips for Your First Message" discussion guide in the Resources section of your Participant Dashboard.
Request an Introduction: Ask your mentee to share a short biography or professional summary so you can familiarize yourself with their background.
Self-Reflect: Consider your personal journey, core strengths, and the unique insights you can offer.
Define Your Motivations: Mentorship offers mutual growth. Clarify what you hope to learn or experience through this partnership—whether it's expanding your coaching skills or gaining fresh generational perspectives.
🛠️ Preparing for the First Meeting
Review Their Profile: Log in to your Participant Dashboard and click on your mentee’s profile. Take a few minutes to review the details they provided in their initial matching survey to get know them more.
Prepare Some Questions: Choose 1–2 pre-generated conversation starters (a.k.a. sparks!) from their profile. These are tailored specifically to your mentee’s survey responses!
☕ Questions marked with a coffee cup are excellent, low-pressure icebreakers.
🚀 Questions marked with a rocket ship are perfect for diving deeper into their goals.
Acknowledge Their Goals: Take note of your mentee’s primary goal (located right beneath their profile questions) and review any associated platform resources.
🤝 At the First Meeting
Establish the Logistics First: It might feel a bit clinical, but setting explicit expectations early builds trust. Clarify how often you will connect and which medium you will use (e.g., in person, via Zoom, phone calls). Getting these logistics out of the way creates a structured environment.
Introduce Yourself: Share a brief summary of your milestones, life highlights, and relevant experiences. Be sure to thank them for any information they shared with you earlier.
Share Your "Why": Let your mentee know why you volunteered your time for this program and how past mentors or advisors helped shape your own journey.
Align on Expectations: Ensure you walk away with a crystal-clear understanding of what your mentee hopes to gain so you can effectively align your guidance with their ambitions. For more support, review our "Introduction and Success Plan" discussion guide.
Agree on Next Steps: Before wrapping up, tentatively schedule your next meeting and mutually agree on 1–2 actionable goals or items to follow up on. Closing with a clear path forward maintains momentum and eliminates any guesswork about when you will speak next. If you've both linked your calendars, you can use the "Schedule Next Meeting" feature in your Participant Dashboard to easily identify your next meeting time.
🔄 After the First Meeting
Reflect: Jot down the main highlights and items for follow-up while they are fresh in your mind. If you can't log the interaction in your dashboard immediately, these quick notes will serve as an easy reference for later.
Log the Conversation: Log your meeting in the Participant Dashboard right after you connect. Recording these milestones helps track your mentorship journey and provides valuable insights to your program coordinators. Additionally, if your mentee mentions facing a significant concern, use this logging step to raise a flag. This safely alerts your program administrator so they can step in and connect your mentee with the right campus or organizational support.
Keep Momentum Going: Lock in the date for your next check-in, share an interesting article or resource, and stay curious about opportunities that can help your mentee excel.

🔍 When You're Matched
Do a Quick Research Pass:
Matched with a peer mentor? Make sure to login to your Participant Dashboard and checkout the information they shared from their matching survey!
Matched with a professional/industry mentor? Look up your mentor’s digital footprint. Are they active on LinkedIn, Twitter, or a blog? Understanding their trajectory will help you ask targeted questions.
Send Your Intro: Send a brief bio using Mentor Collective’s introductory text or email tool. Keep it concise—there is no need for a formal cover letter or a multi-page resume. Two well-crafted paragraphs about where you are today and what you are studying or working toward are perfect. Need a template? Look at our "Tips for Your First Message" discussion guide.
Define Your 6-Month Goals: Think about your short-term and long-term goals. Why did you join this program, and where do you realistically want to be in six months?

🤝 At the First Meeting
Confirm the Framework: Start the conversation by aligning on communication preferences. Decide together how often you will meet and which platforms you will use to connect. Discuss any social media platforms you feel comfortable connecting on.
Own the Relationship: Mentorship is most effective when driven by you (the mentee)! Let your mentor know how you plan to track your milestones—such as sending quick follow-up summaries or managing the scheduling for future meetings.
Present Three Target Goals: Come prepared with three distinct focus areas or questions you want to work through during your time together. Give your mentor a clear picture of what success looks like to you.
⚠️ The Golden Rule: DON’T use your very first conversation to ask for a job, internship, or a major favor.
✅ The Golden Rule: DO explicitly express your gratitude and excitement for the relationship you are building together.
