Looking to kickstart a successful mentorship initiative? To do this, mentorship must be visible across your institution and grounded in data. In this edition of our Monthly Digest, we share actionable tips to get your mentorship program off the ground, ways to leverage data to assess impact and drive next steps, and strategies to engage students and key stakeholders across your institution.
Start Your Program Off Right!
These Partner Knowledge Center resources are a great starting place to learn how to increase recruitment.
Mentorship needs to be a visible and integrated aspect of the student experience.
Have you considered...
- showing up where your students are? Table in the parking lot, visit local places where students hang out between classes, or encourage mentors to spend time in busy student areas like the Writing Center.
- the power of student-led marking? Consider a paid student employee who can create social media campaigns, live stream recruitment events, and engage in peer-to-peer conversations about the power of mentorship.
- promoting mentorship across your institution? Invite guest speakers from other offices to present at virtual or in-person mentorship events, add mentorship participation or training to student transcripts, or ask school leadership to use their social media channels to thank mentors for their participation.

Turn Data Insights Into Action
Why?
Collecting mentorship data ensures action is taken based on key insights and encourages sharing of these insights with stakeholders who have the ability to grow your program. These stakeholders might include colleagues interested in understanding the student experience, deans from other departments, or even participants you are looking to recruit. A data-informed approach is critical to growing an institution-wide culture of mentorship.
How do I gather and use non-cognitive data?
Through your Partner Dashboard, you have visibility into several non-cognitive factors including:
- Academic Help-Seeking
- Strength of Relationship
- Career Decision Self-Efficacy
Visit the Assessments tab of your Partner Dashboard to find survey completion rates and details on the average non-cognitive assessment scores for your program.
Assessment data allows you to monitor how students are feeling on your campus at specific points in their higher education experience. This allows you to take swift action to ensure students receive the proper resources they need throughout their higher education journey.

How do I assess the impact of mentorship?
Run an impact analysis to assess the impact of mentorship on sense of belonging, retention, or academic progress.
Click here to visit our Partner Knowledge Center for the recording, guidelines, how-to videos, and sample template from the first in our three-part impact analysis webinar series.
After performing your analysis, use your findings as part of a data-informed approach to growing mentorship at your institution.
For example, mentorship initiative directors at Florida Atlantic University collaborated with their institutional research office to identify how mentorship had made an impact for specific groups of students. They shared these findings with top leadership at the University, leading to increased and ongoing monetary support for their mentorship initiatives across the institution.
Register today to attend the remaining sessions in this series, where we'll explore how to gather and use data that connects mentorship's impact on retention and academic progress.
